Petroleum coke is a byproduct of crude oil refining the principal constituent of which is carbon and it contains a great amount of sulfur and such heavy metals as nicked and vanadium. Calcined petroleum coke is obtained through calcination the crude coke. Through this process, part of volatile materials and moisture content of crude coke is removed and as a result its weight percentage increases. Calcined coke has plenty of applications in the aluminum, anode, steel, casting cathode protection and other industries. This product is also technically called pre-sulfur coke.
This type of coke is part of the byproducts of crude oil refining obtained at the end of the distillation column. Finally, through the production process, crude coke is converted to the calcined coke which contains a high level of stabilized carbon, and low levels of ash and sulfur. Petroleum coke, compared with metallurgical coke enjoys a higher thermal value and the absorption factor of petroleum coke is much higher that of the metallurgical one (about 10%).
Its ash content is lesser as well. Due to the high temperature conditions in which petroleum coke is produced, it contains a very low amount of combustible volatile materials. As a result, this coke, due to containing a very low volatile substances, is hardly experiences the combustion state.
